At the Olympic Games in Stockholm, Jim Thorpe won the pentathlon and the decathlon. At the victory ceremony, the King oF Sweden told him: “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.”
The following year, he was stripped of his medals For being a professional. In fad he had been paid to play in a minor baseball league. At the time, the amateur status prevailed. In 1982, the bC posthumously reinstated him and awarded the two medals to his family. During his career, Thorpe also played as a professional in the US National Football League (NFL) and in Major League Baseball (MLB).
